At the time of hospital discharge, your baby is still establishing their feedings, weight is still decreasing, and the jaundice level is increasing. Feeding performance, change in weight, and bilirubin level cannot be predicted ahead of time. It is important for your Pediatrician to examine and evaluate your baby for the above and more. They may focus on certain aspects of your baby's exam and discuss their concerns with you.
Parent(s) should select a Pediatrician before leaving the hospital. A list can be provided upon request. Selecting a physician who is close to your home or work, offers after-hours call, and week day/week end clinic time is important. Information about your newborn's birth and hospital stay will be forwarded to your doctor.
In routine cases, the AAP, American Academy of Pediatrics, recommends for newborns to be seen within 48 hours from discharge. If a mother is going home 24 hours after a vaginal birth or within 48 hours after a cesarean birth, then follow up should be within 24 hours. Call your Pediatrician before leaving the hospital to secure a time for follow up.
